How to Qualify For a Credit Card in Australia

Whether you’re new to credit or looking to rebuild or re-establish it, applying for a credit card is a critical step. At first, you’ll have limited options when it comes to applying for a credit card. This advice will shorten the time it takes for you to find, select, qualify for, and obtain the correct card.

As you apply for cards, your credit score gets dinged. That means you’re better off applying for fewer cards, and figuring out which ones you likely qualify for before you spend the time on those pesky forms and taking the short-term inquiry ding.

Determine Your Eligibility

Despite popular belief, earning a low wage does not disqualify you for credit card eligibility in Australia. You can make as little as $10,000 and still qualify for a card. It’s all a matter of applying for a card that suits your needs.

To apply for a credit card, you should be:

  • -18 years of age or older
  • -Not in a state of bankruptcy
  • -A citizen of Australia or permanent legal resident
  • -With a fair or higher credit rating
  • -Bringing home enough money to reasonably pay the maximum limit on the card you’re considering.
  • -This varies based on the type of card you choose, as well as the nature and requirements of the issuing bank. It also helps to have some solid assets to prove your financial security to the bank. For example:
  • -Owning a home or car
  • -Making consistent mortgage or auto loan payments, on time, every month
  • -Relative surplus of income after vital expenses like rent or groceries

Select a Card to Apply For

There’s plenty of information out there about credit cards. Know your credit score and research opportunities in line with your credit range. If your credit isn’t the best, prepare to start with a secured credit card—you’ll need a small deposit which goes towards what you spend.

Read all the terms carefully; deferred interest can be tempting, but some of those cards also come with a very high yearly fee. Know your limits, as it may help to build your credit in other ways and come back to apply for a specific card later.

Understanding The Cost Of A Credit Card

When applying for a credit card, many take on more credit than needed. This can lead to a slippery slope of debt, especially if the card is not paid off in full each month. Check out card calculator which outlines how much interest a person will pay if only making minimum repayments. Don’t become a victim of credit card debt – be informed.

Gather Necessary Documents For Credit Card Application

Photo identification: a driver’s license or passport will suffice—or a primary ID and a second ID, both with no photo. The secondary ID could be a utility bill.

Income proof: Completed taxes and/or payslips will help. Are you a freelancer? Make sure to include a record of your income, even if it’s supplemental to a full-time job. It helps!

Statement to prove debt: Only necessary in the event of a balance transfer.

Most of the time, you can do credit applications online and get an instant decision. However, it’s good to know this info as you evaluate and apply for cards. If you apply for a joint account with someone else, make sure they have this information available, too, and that they meet the requirements.

Remember: You should only apply for cards you are sure you meet the eligibility requirements for. You always get a (small) black mark on your credit for a credit inquiry.

Top Tips For Vacations With Kids

This post is brought to you by Mullahey Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.

Top Tips for Vacationing With Kids

I know summer is nearly over but we’re taking a late summer vacation and I have road trips on my brain.  Because it’s all I’m thinking of I thought I would share my tips and tricks for traveling successfully with kids.

  • 1.  Prep

Gone are the days of packing a suitcase in twenty minutes and hitting the road.  With kids you have to plan, plan, plan or you’ll likely regret it.

Most likely you are intentional about where you want to go and what you’re going to do, but the amenities of those places you will frequent are worth their weight in goal. It’s important to schedule in breaks for the kids to run and play and well, just be kids.  This is crucial for the trip up and back but is also helpful when planning the vacation itinerary. Planning chances for movement is a great way to help ensure you’re vacationing with a happy crew.

  • 2.  Protect

If you still want your vehicle to be in one piece after your return home it’s a good idea to plan ahead.  Bringing a shallow plastic bin and a gallon of water is great for rinsing sand off of little feet.  Keeping napkins and wet wipes on hand are also great for quick spills.

  • 3.  Pack

Pack your items in such a way that you can grab the essentials at a moment’s notice.  If you plan on swimming as soon as you arrive at the hotel put your suits and sunscreen on top.  Planning on sleeping right away?  Put your jammies.  You’ll also want to think through the week’s meals ahead of time and bring with you any groceries you’ll need…or a shopping list so you can hit a local grocery store on the way to your destination.

I’m planning on hitting the road later this summer so if I’ve forgotten anything, please let me know in the comments below!

Stay In The Sun This Summer With Banana Boat®

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Banana Boat®. The opinions and text are all mine.

This summer my family has been very active outdoors and I love it!  The memories we’re making are some that I’ll cherish always.  My daughter is just old enough to begin appreciating the world around her and she’s really embracing all kinds of  outdoor fun.

Her new love at the park is swinging.  She was always a little hesitant to swing but this summer she’s embracing it with gusto!

Chalk drawings remain a favorite of hers. {Check out her umbrella and whale drawings from last summer}

This is her playing a rousing game of Duck, Duck, Goose at VBS. 🙂

No mater the activity, one thing has been the same this summer and that is that we are outdoors and in the sun.  Our yard doesn’t have much shade after the Snow-mageddon of 2013 took down most of our trees.  I can’t protect her from bugs or bees but with Banana Boat® Sport Performance® with Powerstay Technology™ I can protect her from the sun.  It stays on no matter if she’s coloring our driveway, dipping in the pool, or sprinting through the yard shouting “I’m running, I’m running.”

Before I was married I enjoyed the sun without worry then I married a dear man who warned me of the sun’s harmful rays.  For years I avoided the sun instead of using sunscreen.  When my daughter came along I knew I couldn’t stay inside all day hiding from the sun so I bought some sunscreen and fell in love with the outdoors all over again.  I can’t believe how sunscreen has improved since I was a kid!  It’s no longer a thick, sticky, cream that never dries.

Banana Boat Sunscreen

Banana Boat® sun care products go on easily, stay on and protect you from the sun.  Their products are even tested in seven conditions including – sun, pool water, ocean water, wind, sweat, sand and extreme heat. They also provide effective broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.  For more information on how you can keep your family protected this summer visit Banana Boat® online.  You don’t have to fear the sun!

Desire to Create a Haven

Create a Haven

This series, Creating a Haven, kind of has me discouraged before I even start.  Do you want to know why?  It’s because my home doesn’t always feel like a haven.  Sometimes it feels like a messy pig sty.  To be totally transparent, it feels like that now.  My living room has toys that are out of place, my kitchen has dirty dishes in the sink, and I’m pretty sure I have clothes sitting in the wash that I forgot to transfer to the dryer yesterday.

My house isn’t perfect.  Far from it actually.

So you’re probably wondering why am I writing about this topic, for 31 days no less.

The answer is easy.

Because I want to create a haven.  I want it to be a place where my husband can come home and feel at rest.  I want it to be a retreat from the world.  I want it to feel cozy and not chaotic.

One of my deepest desires is for my home to become a haven.  A calm among the storm if you will.  This is why I write and I hope you’ll join me in this journey this month as I try to create a haven.

Just keep in mind this is the journaling of someone attempting the task along side you and not from one who has been there and done that.  We can learn as we go, right?
